The Dye Garden Schools Project - Summer 2025

July 01, 2025

Our Dye Garden Schools programme returned in May, as we welcomed back Primary 4 pupils from our two local Ferguslie Park schools — Glencoats and St. Fergus.

Over three summer-term sessions, the children were introduced to the dye garden and began sowing their own Hopi Sunflower, Marigold, and Woad seeds, which they’ll harvest later in the year.

So far, the pupils have learned how to sow seeds, prick them out, and transplant them into the soil once they’re strong enough to grow on. Alongside these practical skills, they’ve also begun exploring the fascinating idea that colour can come from plants and flowers — not just synthetic sources.

For our final session in June, we invited a photographer along to capture the pupils as they planted their sunflowers and marigolds into their permanent spots in the garden — a joyful milestone in their growing journey.

The pupils will return in September 2025 as P5s to learn how to extract colour from their flowers and explore the beautiful range of colours we can make from our hardwork!

This project has been made possible by the generous support of Creative Scotland's Open Project Funding.
