Indigo Techniques: A day of dyeing and painting with indigo with Lucy Lee of Old Mill Arts

Join artist Lucy Lee on this one-day workshop at the Sculpture House Dye Garden to explore the beauty of indigo.

In one half of this workshop you will learn how to turn indigo into an effective fabric paint using soya milk as a binding material. Indigo has a unique quality as a plant colour, in that it naturally forms into a dry pigment. This allows for making a range of art materials from indigo, and works beautifully as fabric paint. Learning this technique will allow you to experiment with other dry pigments such as colours from the earth, ochres, and oxides. The indigo pigment Lucy uses in her workshops is from Tarai Blue, grown organically by local craftspeople to the farm.

In the second half of this workshop, you will be using indigo that can be easily grown in a garden to dye fabrics and wool. This type of indigo plant can be dried to store, and then with some simple additions, can be reactivated into a beautiful dye giving subtle blues and gorgeous turquoises. Dyeing with indigo is a magical process, and links us to cultures in our past and across the world who have interacted with these plants to create rich and permanent blues.
