Making Earth Pigments: A Hands-On Workshop with Siobhan McLaughlin

Join artist Siobhan for an immersive daytime workshop that explores the art and alchemy of creating natural pigments from the earth. The session begins with an artists talk introducing Siobhan's creative practice and her connection to the land as a source of colour and inspiration. A short mindful walk through the garden will follow, attuning our senses to the colours and textures of the surroundings, thinking about the possibilities of colour through plants that will enable participants to learn practical techniques for:

  • Gathering earth and identifying different pigment types
  • Methods for grinding earth and preparing natural paints
  • The interaction and differences in effect between medium and natural pigments by creating a colour chart.
Finally participants will be invited to create an abstracted landscape from your memories of a favourite walk or place.
This workshop combines artistic exploration, ecological awareness and hands-on experimentation - welcoming anyone inspired by or interested in the natural world.

Participants are invited to bring along samples of earth to make pigments from if they like but this is not compulsory.
